"American companies support American values, such as freedom of speech"

Sure they do... When a Republican is in the White House calling them out or Elon Musk literally uses his vast fortune to buy himself the privilege of posting on Twitter without being censored. On average? Not so much. Remember the leak of Google's "The Good Censor" document? Remember Facebook admitting to widespread partisan censorship? Remember what Twitter was like before X? Remember Parlor getting effectively kicked off the Internet when Trump supporters tried moving to the platform en mass? Heck, just look at BlueSky today. We're still seeing new evidence emerge about the many censorship scandals that took place in our government and big tech. Let's not pretend that the majority of our big tech companies genuinely embrace any American value other than shareholder value.

Ya put USA oligarchs in charge of how the EU regulates their regulatory issues...what could possibly go wrong.

As an European citizen, I can’t se the regulatory effort on tech as something against US companies. Any US company can decide to follow the European rules in Europe, or to leave this market if they feel is too expensive.

But you can’t do business in Europe if you don’t obey to European rules. This is true for Banking & Insurance, for Pharma, for Food, for Automotive, and so forth. Why would tech be different ?

It's true that ultimately, the costs of regulation fall on European citizens and many companies are starting to refuse to release top products in Europe.

The red line is the explicitly stated European strategy to meddle in American politics, particularly on issues of technology and trade. American diplomats have been outraged by far lower degrees of manipulation and abuse from adversaries, let alone from supposed "allies". I suppose the conclusion is that Europe is fully free to act like an American adversary, but they should expect to be treated accordingly.
