Talking about market dominant Gujarati minorities in East Africa, the endogenous mating within narrow communities described by Razib is now largely a thing of the past. It’s now mostly assortative mating by wealth and education in the wider Indian community. And since everyone has a second home in London, and goes to school there, no one will be too bothered if you marry a well-educated or well-off Brit either.

pretty sure it's not a thing of the past for banias in east africa. i am very close to some of them and they are still marrying within subcaste (tho yes, they do marry out, those are usually 'love marriages')

Yes, that seems likely in the US, where Patels are another clannish but highly effective group. However in East Africa itself, most people from these groups emigrated to the West a while back, with the remaining 'market dominant' Asians a more cosmopolitan group centered more around wealth and professional success. Not based on study, admittedly, merely casual observation from the occasional visit.
