The U.S. government pretends to be in control, atop a hierarchy of control. But in reality it has evolved into a spontaneously-organizing system. A kleptocratic oligarchy.
A new kind of system. A form of organized crime. A self-organizing kleptocracy. No one is in control. It is a system for wealth redistribution: stealing wealth from the people who are not leftist elites.
Post-debate, I am reminded of a line from the movie “The Hunt for Red October”: "This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it." Yet the vast majority of the commentary is either the Republicans counting coup or the Democrats disagreeing with their own conclusions (about Biden’s mental acuity). A mentally crippled occupant of the White House is a five-alarm national security emergency. Presidents are entrusted with unilateral decision-making in the game of gods, and our player is played out. In “On War,” Carl von Clausewitz said: "War is the realm of uncertainty; three quarters of the factors on which action in war is based are wrapped in a fog of greater or lesser uncertainty. A sensitive and discriminating judgment is called for; a skilled intelligence to scent out the truth." We are whistling past the graveyard. The man with the codes has a *cold.*
And what culture resulted in Trump heading the Republican party? Non-compliance? Valor? Integrity? Bold truth seeking? He is after all, the epitome of good character, sound judgement, and a model public servant.
I see the points but disagree things are so bad and that such conclusions can be drawn
Reagan was senile AF for more than a term. No one accused that administration of being based in compliance over merit. There are more than 2 kinds of hierarchies as afar as I can tell.
A Presidential administration is more than one man. The guy up top is the leader, and I agree 1000% that the debate made clear Biden has declined too far to be an effective leader. But Biden was also a-OK just a few months ago, delivering an excellent state of the union address.
Decline is a sad thing. There are no easy answers to when a talented person is no longer reliable due to age. It comes down to judgement. Well-meaning, competent people can have different opinions on when the line is crossed. It is not an indication that democrats are hopelessly lost in compliance mode. I think it has a whole lot more to do with deep fear of another Trump presidency
You don’t argue that making something significantly smarter than us is safe. You’re arguing that it’ll take a long time and it will stay human level for quite a while.
That is an argument that alignment can be figured out over the span of decades, applied to actual AGIs instead of us needing to solve it beforehand.
It’s true that we’ll see diminishing returns but you don’t argue any particular point where that will set in. If it happens at human level intelligence then we’ll probably be fine. If it happens significantly beyond human level then we’re fucked.

Do you not understand why building something significantly smarter than us is a risk?
You haven't been on this blog long, have you?
You're in for a treat, since this is one of the best places to deprogram yourself from doomer fantasies.

Malloc--you have the burden of proof here. I don't see any.
